Black Macho and The Myth of the Superwoman, 1979

This book composed of two essays looking at myths of black masculinity and the difficulties for the black female who pursues a feminist interpretation of African American Culture.  First published in 1979, it was republished by Verso in 1990 with a new introduction detailing some of the controversy and criticism around the book's initial publication.  Added to this edition as well is a bibliography of subsequent publications on race and gender, masculinity and sexuality.

Black Popular Culture, 1992

"Co-edited" with Gina Dent

This book includes a series of essays and discussion transcripts coming out of the conference Black Popular Culture at the Dia Foundation in the fall of 1991.  Contributors include Manthia Diawara, Cornel West, Henry Louis Gates, Greg Tate, Tricia Rose, Lisa Kennedy, Sherley Anne Williams, Marlon Riggs, Stuart Hall and Isaac Julien.  The goal of the conference was to add cultural relativism to the mix on discussions of black popular culture.  I conceived the conference and spearheaded it during the three days of its meeting.  Gina Dent subsequently edited the volume and ushered it into publication. Very special.

This book is composed of essays written primarily between 1990 and 2003, including many reviews and discussions of books, films, stage productions, some music. There are sections devoted to Queer Theory, Popular Culture, Multiculturalism and Henry Louis Gates, Jr.  Published in 2004, it also features a lengthy introduction with a photo album insert containing photographs of myself, family and friends.  This is my favorite book of my own thus far.

Invisibility Blues, Revised Edition 2008

This latest edition includes a new cover and a new introduction on the same collection of essays published in 1990.  I had originally intended to add a lot of other materials I had written in the period from 1971 through 1990 but Verso was going through massive changes in its organization so I opted to hold back on the additional materials and publish them elsewhere, although I am not sure whether or if at this point.
