For decades, historians have alleged that the campaign for clemency on Roger Casement’s behalf failed because the British Government succeeded in tarnishing his reputation through the exposure of his homosexually explicit diaries. However, after examining many American newspapers it became apparent that Roger Casement’s reputation did not suffer in America due to the British government’s smear campaign.
